Body found in Augusta Canal; authorities investigating it as 'suspicious death'

Law enforcement is investigating the suspicious death of a man found in the Augusta Canal on Saturday morning.

Around 11:12 a.m. Aug. 6, Richmond County deputies were called to the Augusta Canal behind the Salvation Army Kroc Center on the 1800 block of Broad Street for a dead body in the canal.

The unidentified man was in the water for several days before he was found, according to the Richmond County Coroner's Office. His body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy and identification.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Unit are investigating the incident as a "suspicious death."
