Body found in burned vehicle in southeastern Aiken County

Jul. 28—A suspicious death is under investigation after a human body was found in a burned vehicle in southeastern Aiken County on Thursday, according to news releases from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

The deceased individual suffered "severe thermal injuries," and because of their extent, the race and sex of the person couldn't be determined immediately, Ables' release stated.

Sheriff's deputies discovered the body after responding around 9:50 a.m. to a call about a burned vehicle on Boggy Gut Road.

The vehicle's location was approximately one mile off Williston Road, which also is known as U.S. Route 278, according to Ables' release.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigators also responded to the scene.

An autopsy of the body was scheduled for Friday in Newberry.
