Body found in Illinois storage unit identified as former police chief Richard Young

Human remains found stashed away inside a storage unit in central Illinois have been identified as those of a former police chief, according to authorities.

The remains belong to Richard Young, who once served as the head of the Maquon village police, according to a press release from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities were able to confirm his identity on Tuesday, after comparing DNA taken from his badly decomposed body with samples submitted by Young’s relatives.

His cause of death was not released, but a toxicology report showed a high level of a toxic chemical commonly found in eyedrops was present in Young’s system, WQAD-TV reported.

Marcy Oglesby, 50, of Maquon was previously arrested and charged with first-degree murder and concealing the death of a person in connection with the case. She has since pleaded not guilty and remained behind bars at the Knox County Jail Wednesday.

During an interview with law enforcement, Oglesby initially claimed the smell in her unit was from an opossum that had previously died there. She later admitted there was a body inside a large box she had initially refused to open for police.

Authorities did not immediately say how the pair were related, but Knox County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeremy Moore testified in a February hearing that Oglesby had been in a relationship with Young.

The identification comes months after authorities discovered Young’s remains on Oct. 7, 2022. Police responded that day to Roberts Self Storage in Maquon, after they were alerted to a strange smell coming from one of the units.

Maquon is about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.
