PORTSMOUTH — City police are investigating an untimely death after a bicyclist found a deceased man near railroad tracks on Tuesday afternoon.

The body was found by the tracks in the area of McDonough and Cabot streets, according to Michael Maloney, acting Portsmouth police chief. The report came in just after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Police investigated for several hours Tuesday, according to Maloney, and determined there is no danger to the public in connection with the death.

“We don’t believe there to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding it or any cause of concern for local residents,” Maloney said. “We don’t have any reason to believe that there is any criminal aspect to this report."

Though the man who died has been identified by Portsmouth police his identity is not being released, Maloney said Wednesday, while the cause and manner of death are still being determined.

Maloney said the man’s body was “out there for a relatively short period of time as opposed to days or weeks" and said he was not struck by a passing train.

The body of the man was in an area “not out in the wide open,” Maloney added, but visible to pedestrians and bicyclists alongside the railroad tracks.

The state medical examiner’s office investigated along with the response from Portsmouth police and firefighters.
