TOOELE, Utah (ABC4) — Rescuers have recovered the body of a man who fell through the ice at a Tooele reservoir late Monday night.

Tooele City Police Department said the 20-year-old man was recovered out of Settlement Canyon Reservoir at about 11:20 p.m. Authorities have not released the identity of the man but said more information would be released at an appropriate time.

“Our hearts ache for the family and loved ones of the deceased,” said Tooele City Police Department in a press release. “They are in our thoughts as they go through this tragic loss.”

Authorities were called to the reservoir shortly before 7 p.m. after a woman said the man fell in shortly after rescuing her out of the ice. She told police that she had broken through the ice and he jumped in to save her, but as she got out of the water, he fell in.

The man was under the ice for about four hours before rescuers were able to locate him.

The woman who fell into the water was treated for cold exposure and taken to a local hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery.

This marks the second death within a year at Settlement Canyon Reservoir. In February 2023, a 14-year-old boy fell through the ice and died after a long and desperate overnight search.

Tooele PD Cpl. Colbey Bentley said ice can be “so tricky” and become very dangerous fast. He urged people to stay off the ice on the reservoir.
