Body of second canoeist recovered

Nov. 15—The body of a canoeist from New Ulm missing for 18 days has been recovered from the waters of Minong Flowage in northwestern Wisconsin.

A rescue squad and Douglas County deputies located the body of 27-year-old Andrew DeRock, 27, Wednesday afternoon. He and Ryan Busch, 26, of New Ulm were reported missing Oct. 29.

Busch's body was located Nov. 8.

The two had been camping in the northwestern Wisconsin area and were last known to be canoeing on Oct. 28.

Family members who found their capsized canoe contacted authorities.

Land, water and air searches were conducted over the 18 days by multiple agencies, the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said.

Weather conditions at the time of the incident were clear, calm, with a full moon, and not considered a factor. Obstacles such as weather, cold water temperatures, submerged stumps and natural foliage in the search area hindered search efforts, the sheriff's department said.
