Body of New York man recovered from Lake Monroe

Paynetown State Recreation Area will offer eclipse-themed activities on Sunday.

Indiana Conservation Officers recovered the body of a New York man Saturday afternoon from Lake Monroe, according to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Witnesses said Rajesh Kumar, 40, Ozone Park, New York, jumped off a boat to swim, then never resurfaced.

Emergency personnel were called to Paynetown State Recreation Area at about 3:50 p.m. to search. Kumar's body was found a short time later by conservation officers, who were assisted by the Monroe County Dive Team. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but Kumar was pronounced dead at the scene.

No life jackets were in use at the time, DNR reported. An investigation is ongoing.
