Bodycam footage shows off-duty King County sheriff’s deputy saving man from burning car

Body camera footage released Wednesday by the King County Sheriff’s Office gives a first-hand look at the moments an off-duty deputy pulled a man from a burning car Monday morning.

As the car was engulfed in flames, a responding deputy walked up to the scene and off-duty Sergeant Rich Barton, seen in the video in a khaki colored sweater and glasses, single handedly tried to pull the 6 foot, 200 pound driver up the hill and away from the car.

Sgt. Barton and the other deputy started to pull the man up and about a minute later they called for more help, as more law enforcement officials rushed down to clear the thick brush.

The deputies were able to get the driver to a safe space for medical attention. KIRO 7 is told the man is in stable condition, but has a long road to recovery.

Sgt. Barton suffered smoke inhalation and second-degree burns to his hand, but was back on patrol Wednesday. He spoke exclusively with KIRO 7′s Brittany Toolis about the entire thing on Tuesday.
