A first look at Richard Madden in new spy thriller series Citadel has been released.

The Prime Video show sees the Bodyguard star play a former elite agent called Mason Kane whose mind was wiped after his elite spy agency Citadel was destroyed.

He stars alongside The Matrix Resurrections' Priyanka Chopra Jonas, The Hunger Games' Stanley Tucci and The Crown's Lesley Manville in the show – and going by a number of first-look photos, it's set to be a tense thriller.

The synopsis reads: "Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency –tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people – was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows.

"With Citadel's fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They've remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts.

"Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order.

"Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love."

It's been confirmed that Manville will play Dahlia Archer, the British ambassador to the US, in the series.

Also starring in Citadel are Death in Paradise's Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, NOS4A2's Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy, Skyscraper's Roland Møller as Anders Silje and Davik Silje, and The Midnight Sky's Caoilinn Springall as Hendrix Conroy.

The show is due to premiere on Prime Video on April 28 with two episodes, and counts Marvel's Russo brothers as producers and David Weil as showrunner.

Citadel premieres on Prime Video on Friday, April 28.
