PWSA makes repairs to water main, service restored to customers but boil water advisory continues

Several communities in Pittsburgh lost access to their water after a water main break in Highland Park.

According to Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, a 20-inch break impacted the Garfield tank system on Friday at 2 p.m.

When the leak was isolated, storage tank levels continued to drop, meaning customers in various neighborhoods lost pressure.

A loss of pressure means contaminants can enter drinking water.

Customers in the following neighborhoods are being asked to boil water:

  • Garfield

  • Central Lawrenceville

  • East Liberty

  • Highland Park

  • Morningside

  • Stanton Heights

  • Upper Lawrenceville

The boil water advisory impacts approximately 4,400 households.

Water buffaloes will be placed at the following locations:

  • Oranmore Street at Somerville Street

  • Cornwall Street at North Atlantic Avenue

  • Stanton Avenue at Woodbine Street

  • Hawthorne Street at Amsterdam Avenue

  • Callowhill Street at N. Highland Avenue

  • Heberton Street at Hampton Street

The PWSA said water should have been returned to the community at around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey release a statement about the PWSA repairs.

“I would like to thank everyone for their patience as PWSA crews work diligently to finalize repairs and to restore service to those impacted by the water main break yesterday. I appreciate all the hard work they have done to repair the water main as well as activating to make sure residents had access to water during this time,” said Gainey.
