The Boise State football team added an edge rusher from Utah to its 2024 recruiting class on Tuesday.

Corner Canyon High School’s Roman Caywood announced his commitment during a live video that was streamed on his Instagram channel.

Standing behind a man-made water fall in his grandparents’ opulent backyard, Caywood and his father unzipped hoodies, revealing Boise State T-shirts as a crowd of family and friends cheered.

Caywood chose the Broncos over fellow finalist Washington State, but he said there was nothing easy about the decision. The three-star recruit also has scholarship offers from Nevada and Idaho, but he whittled his list of schools down to two after taking an official visit to Washington State on June 18.

“I have nothing negative to say about either program,” Caywood told the Idaho Statesman on Tuesday night. “I had two right choices in front of me, but at the end of the day, I just had to go with my gut.”

Caywood, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound native of Murray, Utah, has played defensive end, edge, tight end and wide receiver during his high school career, but he said he’ll focus on edge at Boise State.

He admitted he didn’t know much about the history of the position at Boise State until he visited the Broncos’ campus on June 10. Caywood said he got to watch highlights of former Boise State pass rushers like DeMarcus Lawrence, who recently signed a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, and he got more excited with every clip.

“They’ve produced a lot of monsters and I’m hoping to be the next monster to come out of Boise State,” Caywood said.

Caywood also got to watch highlights of his soon-to-be edge coach Jabril Frazier during the visit. Frazier, who played at Boise State from 2015 to 2018 and signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2018, has been Caywood’s main recruiter, and they’ve grown close over the past few months, he said.

“You can’t go wrong with a coach that has done it at the highest level,” Caywood said. “He’s a younger guy with a lot of knowledge. I’m excited to learn from him and to experience everything that comes with playing the position.”

Caywood spent the first three years of his high school career at Cottonwood High School in Utah. He said he transferred to Corner Canyon for his senior season because he wanted to test himself against better competition.

He mostly played tight end and wide receiver until last season, when he took over at edge because of roster turnover. It was a natural fit. He posted 45 tackles, including 18 for loss and nine sacks last season.

“I feel like I progressed so much at edge in one year that I know the sky is the limit,” said Caywood, who also caught 29 passes for 595 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. “I made the switch and fell in love with it right away.”
