Boise State fills 2024 nonconference schedule with FCS team. Houston game off for now
The Boise State football team’s 2024 schedule is full once again.
The Broncos had an opening next year after Houston canceled its trip to Boise in August. The Cougars are in the Big 12 now and they’re likely trying fill their nonconference schedule with more winnable games.
Boise State will host Portland State on Sept. 21, 2024. The Broncos will pay the Vikings $425,000 to make the trip to Albertsons Stadium, according to the game contract.

The contract also includes a $425,000 penalty if the game is canceled for anything other than mutual agreement by both schools or an act of God.
Boise State’s nonconference schedule in 2024 also includes road games at Georgia Southern (Aug. 31) and Oregon (Sept. 14), and a home game against Oregon State (Sept. 7).
The Broncos are 7-1 all-time against Portland State, which competes in the FCS Big Sky Conference. The programs last met in 2019 at Albertsons Stadium and Boise State cruised to a 45-10 win. They first played in 1972.
Three former Broncos play for Portland State this season: running back Andrew Van Buren, wide receiver Maclaine Griffin and offensive lineman Dallas Holliday. Van Buren and Griffin will exhaust their eligibility this year, but Holliday could still be around next year thanks to the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offered players because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Boise State’s game at Houston in 2025 is still on, said Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey, who added that his staff is working on rescheduling the 2024 game.
“We are committed to bringing Houston to Albertsons Stadium in the near future, while adhering to our scheduling philosophy that positions Boise State football to compete for championships,” Dickey said in a prepared statement.
Dickey said in 2021 that scheduling nonconference games against at least one team from a Power Five conference, one from a Group of Five conference and one FCS school each year will best position the Broncos to take advantage of the expanding College Football Playoff, which moves to 12 teams next year.
