A Boise sushi favorite has closed. This ‘fresh, authentic’ restaurant just opened

If you drive down West State Street and sense something different, keep your eyes on the road.

Your taste buds need you to stay alive.

Located near the busy intersection of Glenwood and State streets, Krung Thai Restaurant and Sushi bar recently opened.

Sakana Japanese Sushi Bar & Grill, 7107 W. State St., closed this summer. Sakana had been in that location — in Garden City, technically — since 2016. The local Asian brand still operates at 925 S. Vista Ave. in Boise and at 1718 S. Eagle Road in Meridian. The State Street location was “one of my favorite sushi places in Boise,” a Yelp reviewer wrote in 2019.

If sushi was the draw for Sakana fans, Krung Thai has the goods to win their business. It’s been a Nampa mainstay since 2007 at 3008 Garrity Blvd. The family-run restaurant has earned an impressive 4.4 out of 5 stars on Google reviews — with lots of recent 5-star action. “We had the sushi,” a customer wrote earlier this year. “It was fresh, authentic and delicious. The menu was extensive. The staff was efficient and fast. We unintentionally made quite a mess, broke a dish, and the staff was understanding.”

Sounds like a win.

Actually, a win-win. Because in addition to sushi, Krung Thai’s six-page menu also includes noodles, steak, chicken and duck. Some of the entrees are seriously tempting.

Fried rice options come with choice of chicken, pork, beef, tofu or vegetarian. (Add $5 for seafood medley, $4 for prawns, $1 for beef.) The Krung Thai Fried Rice ($13.95) includes stir-fried rice with egg, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes and onions, topped with green onion and cilantro.

The “chef’s specials” feature eye-catchers such as Honey Walnut Prawn ($20.95) and a Crying Tiger, aka Thai-herb-marinated, steak ($20.95). The Pad Thai Lobster ($20.95) comes with stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp and a special sauce. It’s served on the side of lobster topped with pad Thai sauce, peanuts and bean sprouts.

Krung Thai on State Street clearly is slowing, if not stopping, traffic already. During a recent early lunch hour, parking had already filled up in front of the restaurant.
