Bologna sandwich the length of a building to be featured at the Lebanon Area Fair

Lebanon bologna, one of the Valley's most popular food items, will be the talk of this years fair as Visit Lebanon Valley and local businesses attempt to create what they're calling the world's largest Lebanon bologna sandwich.

On Tuesday, July 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the sandwich will be assembled using Seltzer's Smokehouse Meats and unveiled as a part of the Lebanon Area Fair's community night.

Guinness World Records won't be there to officially recognize the achievement, but Visit Lebanon Valley President Jennifer Kuzo said that she's pretty sure no one else has built a 150-foot-long Lebanon bologna sandwich.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the record for the largest sandwich ever was set in 2011 in, coincidentally, Beirut, Lebanon. That sandwich stretched to a whopping total of 2,411 feet and 5 inches.

There's no such record for the longest sandwich comprised of Lebanon Bologna.

Kuzo said that because of physical restraints, such as the size of the north hall of the expo center, the sandwich will not exceed 150 feet. If they drive enough donations, the sandwich would take up the entire length of that building.

"I proposed that we do 160 feet just to be even more humorous, and just have 10 feet peeking out of the end of the hall into the mass hallway," Kuzo said, "but the fair said no, no, you can't go outside the north hall because the pigs are there."

"That would really be wrong; they'd start eating the other end of the sandwich!"

The idea for the event was born out Kuzo's background in promotion and looking for something typically Lebanon Valley. Eventually it was decided that nothing encompasses Lebanon Valley more than a giant Lebanon bologna sandwich hosted at the Lebanon Area Fair, promoting a good cause at the Lebanon County Christian Ministries.

Fairgoers are able to taste a slice of the sandwich once it's completed for free, along with all the toppings offered at the fixin's bar.

Lebanon Bologna will be the theme of the event, as bumper stickers, buttons and T-shirts commemorating the date will be available to purchase.

Their goal of a 150-foot sandwich will be built through sponsorships. Every $100 represents a one-foot "bite." All sponsorship fees go directly to Lebanon County Christian Ministries.

If they reach their goal, $15,000 would be donated to LCCM and be used to feed the hungry. If they don't meet that goal, the length of the sandwich would be determined by how much is donated:

-$100 provides 50 noon meals.

-$200 provides a family of four with a supplemental food order.

-$500 provides food for 10 single person households.
