🌱 Bomb Scare Backs Up PCH + Who Is The Green Gaiter Bandit?

Happy Saturday, Huntington Beach, and happy National Puzzle Day! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

There was a bomb scare on Tuesday. Also, the FBI is looking for the Green Gaiter Bandit. Finally, Joyce Hoffman was on-hand for the ribbon cutting at her statue.

First, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy. High: 68 Low: 47.

Here are the top stories today in Huntington Beach:

  1. Were you caught up in Tuesday’s traffic interruption from Coral Cay on PCH to Broadway? A man was walking his dog when the canine sniffed an object that was six inches long and “looked like it was connected with green wires with some kind of motor.” He called the police. The bomb squad came out and removed the item. It turned out to be a fireworks mortar. (Sun News)

  2. The Green Gaiter Bandit is wanted for at least 14 (attempted) bank robberies. These include the Wells Fargo Bank at 9971 Adams Avenue on December 30 and the Chase Bank at 21502 Brookhurst Boulevard on October 30 and December 3. With several local PDs already after him, the FBI has taken note and is urging anyone with information to call (310) 477-6565. (CBS)

  3. Surfing pioneer Joyce Hoffman has been honored with a life-size statue in Dana Point. Now 75, Hoffman, a two-time World Surfing champion, was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame, and has her own signature surfboard. We learned Friday that she was on hand to cut the ribbon of the space in Watermen’s Plaza. (CBS)

  4. On Thursday, we learned that a travel editor considers the HB Central Library “a spectacular work by Richard Neutra and his son Dion,” “a hidden gem of sorts,” and merited inclusion in the series of the world’s most beautiful libraries. However, this honor doesn’t apply to the 1990s addition. It does point to the plants and water features. (The Daily Beast)

  5. The former Super Mex at 19684 Beach Boulevard is now Qué Vida Tacos. The slogan, ‘Your local taco shop, pero poquito más bonito,’ refers to what the owner calls “elevated counter service.” The focus is on authenticity and the representation of several of Mexico’s regions. The venue opened on December 7, but it will take until March for brunch to be added. (The OCR)
