LOUDONVILLE − A bomb threat at the juvenile correctional facility near Mohican State Park outside Loudonville has been ruled a hoax.

A student at Mohican Young Star Academy told a counselor Wednesday afternoon that a bomb had been placed in a restroom, according to Chief Deputy David Blake of the Ashland County Sheriff's Office.

Law-enforcement officers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources responded first, then called the county bomb squad operated through the Sheriff's Office.

"They called us because the device was proclaimed to be a bomb," Blake explained.

Academy staff moved all of the children out of the building and into another facility.

No explosives, fake bomb was 'appliances wired together'

The bomb squad entered the building, and learned the homemade device contained no explosives.

The fake bomb actually was "appliances wired together," according to Andy Chow, an ODNR spokesperson.

"The scene was cleared and the situation was resolved," Chow said.

The bomb squad left and the children's activities returned to normal.

As for the student who made the prank scare, the person's actions are being investigated.

"Officers will meet with the ... Prosecutor’s Office to determine if charges should be filed," Chow said.
