Bomb threat empties a Broward high school and locks down elementary as cops investigate

A bomb threat sent South Plantation High into lockdown and cleared its campus Wednesday, Plantation police said on social media.

At about 12:30 p.m., Plantation police wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that they got a call about a bomb at the high school, 1300 SW 54th Ave. As a “safety measure” they emptied the campus and temporarily put the neighboring Plantation Park Elementary, 875 SW 54th Ave., on lockdown as well.

But by 1:15 p.m., only the high school was affected, said John Sullivan, a school district spokesman.

Officers investigated the risk at the high school until 2:52 p.m., when they posted an update on X clearing the scene.

“SPHS has been cleared and is safe. The roadways are back open and Plantation Park Elementary is currently having dismissal,” authorities wrote.

Police had asked people to avoid the area from Peters Road to Southwest 14th Street along Southwest 54th Avenue. They had also asked parents and guardians to pick up South Plantation High students at Heritage Park, 1100 South Fig Tree Ln.

“If you are picking up your child, please go into the first entrance of Heritage Park at Fig Tree Lane and Peters Road. Go all the way to the back of the park at the roundabout to pick up,” Plantation police said.

Students who had cars at the high school could go back to get them.
