Bonnarens leads Abilene Christian women past Dixie State in WAC basketball play

Jamie Bonnarens, a grad transfer from Colorado State, scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds – both game highs – to spark Abilene Christian past Dixie State 71-53 in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Teague Center.

Sarah Griswold added 10 points, and Tatum Barber had nine as the Wildcats (10-3 overall, 2-0 WAC) won their third consecutive game.

Breaunna Gillen led Dixie State (5-8, 1-1) with 16 points, while Averi Papa had 11, and Emily Isaacson had 10.

ACU never trailed, and Barber’s 3-point goal snapped the last tie and sent the Wildcats into the second quarter leading 16-13.

ACU also hit two 3s – one each by Bella Earle and Kamryn Mraz – to end the half with a 33-25 advantage.

The Wildcats led by as much as 13 in the third quarter, but Dixie closed within five (53-48) on a 3-point goal by Isaacson.

The Wildcats answered with a 13-0 run and held on for the victory.

ACU outrebounded Dixie 44-26 and outscored the Trailblazers 17-2 off second-chance points. The Wildcats also forced 16 turnovers while committing 10, but outscored Dixie 21-10 off turnovers.

ACU plays Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a conference game in Nacogdoches. SFA (10-3, 1-0) beat Texas-Rio Grand Valley 65-50 in its WAC opener Thursday in Edinburg.

SFA, ranked No. 9 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 poll, had its WAC game at Lamar on Saturday postponed because of COVID-19 protocols by Lamar.
