HOT PICK

Friday

Blues rock: Even though the sound of blues music has changed since it was popularized in the '20s by incorporating jazz and rock, some of the most prolific figures in the genre are women such as Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, Alberta Hunter and Bonnie Raitt. In 1991, Raitt gave everyone "Something To Talk About" when the blues rock song beat out Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston at the 1992 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

In February, Raitt's song "Just Like That" won Best American Roots Song and Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Her song "Just Like That" won Best American Roots Song and a visibly shocked Raitt, 73, felt humbled by her Song of the Year win. While she said she couldn’t choose her favorite among the other nominees, she did allow that, “Adele’s vocal breaks my heart. I love Harry (Styles). Lizzo ... come on. I love all of those records.” Raitt kept up the gratitude as she turned to leave. “I’m so lucky to do this for a living ... I’m going to go cry now."

Raitt will perform Friday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

If you go: 8 p.m. Friday, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, 84-245 Indio Springs Parkway, Indio. $59 to $99. 760-342-5000. fantasyspringsresort.com

Gone Gone Beyond will perform at Pappy and Harriet's in Pioneertown, Calif., on March 9, 2023.

Folk: Gone Gone Beyond is a folk band, but the group is taking the genre in a new direction and combining influences of electronica, jazz, soul and international music that has been featured at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, South By Southwest and Lightning In A Bottle. See for yourself when the band performs on Thursday at Pappy and Harriet's.

Los Angeles band Haunted Summer, featuring husband-and-wife duo Bridgette Eliza Moody and John Seasons, will also perform. In 2022, the couple covered Daniel Johnston's heartbreaking tune "You Put My Love Out the Door." The music video fit the melancholic beauty of the song with the couple sitting against a door.

Herb Alpert and his wife, singer Lani Hall, return to the McCallum Theatre Jan. 27.
Herb Alpert and his wife, singer Lani Hall, return to the McCallum Theatre Jan. 27.

Jazz: Trumpeter Herb Alpert rose to fame in the early '60s when he incorporated world music influences in his instrumental variations of popular tunes, mostly Latin brass music. He worked with members of the Wrecking Crew, a collective of Los Angeles session musicians, on his first four albums released under the name "Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass."

The fourth album, "Whipped Cream and Other Delights," released in 1965 and featured covers of pop standards such as Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's "Love Potion No. 9," Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow's "A Taste of Honey" and Tony Velona's "Lollipops and Roses." The album cover, featuring model Dolores Erickson covered in whipped cream, was just as memorable as the music. It went on to sell six million copies in America.

Alpert and his wife, Lani Hall, will perform Thursday at the McCallum Theatre.

If you go: 7 p.m. Thursday, McCallum Theatre, 73-000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert. $55 to $75. 760-340-2787. mcallumtheatre.com

Comedy: Even though Tosh.0 went off the air in 2020, comedian Daniel Tosh continues his brand of raunchy and offensive stand-up comedy.
