'Boogie Bomb' replica from Fortnite found at Boston airport

Airport Security is very strict around the world, but sometimes, travellers forget the basics and still bring questionable items with them.

A Fortnite: Battle Royale toy was discovered and inspected during a security check at Boston Logan Airport on Tuesday (30 August). The toy was a replica of a grenade known as a "Boogie Bomb" in the video game.

In-game, a Boogie Bomb is a “rare utility item that causes everyone within the blast radius to start dancing for five seconds, or until they take damage, whichever comes first".

But the toy owner soon discovered that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials weren’t dancing. The toy was confiscated.

“Replica grenades are not allowed in any travel bag!” Dan Velez, TSA Media Spokesperson for New England said in a tweet on Wednesday (31 August).

Toy weapons are generally allowed. However, the toy needs to be checked in according to TSA’s rules on Transporting Firearms and Ammunition.

According to the agency, a toy grenade similar to the one used in Fortnite is prohibited because it looks too much like a real one.

"Replicas of explosives, such as hand grenades, are prohibited in checked and carry-on baggage," the agency states.

If a TSA officer has reason to believe that a particular item poses a security risk, that officer has the authority "to prohibit that item" from passing through the screening checkpoint.

According to a report first posted by masslive.com, officers have said that earlier this month, airport security officers prevented a man carrying throwing stars and daggers from boarding a flight.

In addition, this year, officials at Boston Logan Airport's security checkpoint have discovered 18 firearms. The most recent firearm was found on 18 August. The gun was the size of a pen.
