Border agents seize $8.7 million worth of cocaine on Ambassador Bridge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Customs and Border Protection Agents seized an estimated $8.7 million in cocaine after a truck was searched late Monday on the Ambassador Bridge.

An affidavit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court detailed the seizure. Agents were conducting outbound customs when a truck driver ignored their instructions to pull over and tried to continue on to the tolls. He was eventually stopped.

The driver was identified as Gagandeep Singh, an Indian citizen who lives in Canada. Officers noticed that the seal on the trailer doors did not match the seal on the paperwork. In their search, they found cardboard boxes filled with an estimated 290 kilograms of suspected cocaine.

A K-9 alerted to the odor of a controlled substance and the powder tested positive for cocaine in field tests.

Investigators also found scissors and duct tape inside the cab of the truck that matched the packaging on the boxes. In the affidavit, the lead agent believed there was enough evidence to tie the cocaine to “large scale drug distribution activities.”

If convicted of possession with intent to distribute, the felony charge carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
