Border Town Days draws more than 2,000

Aug. 1—From fire truck sirens to the musical hum of trumpets playing on the back of parade floats, activities for Border Town Days Saturday attracted over 2,000 residents.

They lined the sides of U.S. 60/70 for the 56th annual Border Town Days parade on Saturday morning in Texico City Park.

The annual celebration is a family-friendly event that brings the combined neighboring communities of Texico and Farwell, Texas, for a day-long celebration. Chairman of the event for 19 years, Rob Pomper said that this event couldn't be possible without the love and support of the people of the two communities.

"This is a community driven event and its a reason to come out and show community pride and community spirit. Texico and Farwell have been doing this for decades and this is just a great reason to have reunions, to have the classes come back and to get out and enjoy being a part of our local community," Pomper said.

This year's theme was "Small Towns, Big Dreams," which was decided after locals wrote their ideas to the Tribune, said Pomper.

The Border Town Days 5k race and 1 mile run, led the annual celebration at 8 a.m. Pomper said that winners for the 1 mile and 5k race had yet to be announced as of Tuesday's interview. After the foot race, attendees prepared for the parade.

The parade featured iconic town staples, such as the local high school's sports teams, gymnastic teams, horseback riders and large tractors. As the parade rolled past the state border and into Farwell City Park, candy and beaded necklaces were tossed out to the crowds.

Residents cheered as each parade float demonstrated a variety of tricks, such dancing cheerleaders to honking of hot rods that cruised down the road.

After the parade residents of the two towns were invited to enjoy local entertainment with live music, food provided by local non-profits, and a bike decorating competition that was open to residents to compete in.

Parade Winners:

— The Texico Football Team

— The Farwell Band

— The Texico Class of 1973

— The Farwell Class of 1993

Pomper said that there are always four winners when it comes to competing in the parade competition.

Bike Decorating Winners:

— Six-year-old, Brooklyn Vega.

— Seven-year-old, Jase Chilvers.
