Boring Company accused of illegal dumping by Clark County official

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Clark County official has accused the company building transportation tunnels beneath the Las Vegas Strip of illegally dumping wet dirt in a lot. However, County officials say the person permitted to use that lot had allowed the company to do just that.

The Elon Musk-owned Boring Company, the entity responsible for constructing the Vegas Loop tunnel project currently transporting people across the Las Vegas Convention Center, Resorts World, and planned to expand across Las Vegas, is being accused of illegally dumping wet dirt in a lot at the Commercial Center just east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Posted to the Musk-owned X social media platform, Tick Segerblom, Commissioner for Clark County’s District E, accused the company of the dumping, alongside a photo of the alleged dump site near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway, saying, “Thanks to @OyVegas I caught The Boring Company illegally dumping wet dirt at Commercial Center.”

Officials from Clark County told Dayvid Figler of City Cast Las Vegas that the material was being dumped in a private lot to dry before being shipped elsewhere. The lot, which is being used by a contractor with a permit and permission to use the site for a storm drain project on Karen Avenue unrelated to the Boring Company’s tunnels, allowed the company to use the space to dump the wet dirt from the tunnel construction.

Segerblom’s accusation of illegal dumping is the latest issue to arise with the Boring Company’s construction in Las Vegas. In 2023, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited the company for exposing workers to a hazardous mixture of construction materials. For their part, officials from the Boring Company denied the allegations in the OSHA findings.

Recently, Forbes reported that on June 15, 2023, Clark County cited the company for exposing support beams, causing the Las Vegas monorail to temporarily halt services. The report said engineers were brought in to assess the risk, and cement was poured over the pillar base before the monorail reopened the next day.

8newsnow.com has contacted Clark County, the Boring Company, and Segerblom for comment. If they respond, this story will be updated.
