"I trust that before the end of this plenary sitting we will have reached an agreement within the Council and the adoption of the joint proposal put forward by the Commission," he said.

The EU Council has been discussing the new sanctions package since last week, and agreement on the terms of the new sanctions is expected to be reached by Oct. 5 or 6.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the EU to start working on the new sanctions package following Russian attacks on critical Ukrainian infrastructure in September.

Prior to that, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed confidence that a new sanctions package would eventually be passed.

According to earlier reports, the new sanctions will include restrictions against the Russian steel industry and technologies used by the Russian army, as well as against accomplices of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The new sanctions will also ban EU citizens from holding senior positions in Russian state-owned enterprises.
