Users can stop inside the locations to request a bicycle from a front desk staff member, with a valid ID and signed waiver to use a bicycle. Riders can use the bicycle for up to three hours and then return it to the same location; they must be returned by the end of the day. There are a total of 40 bikes available.

Riders who experience an issue with a bike during their rides should call Summit Cycling Center at 330-608-1107 if they're in Akron or R&D Bike Shop at 330-848-2453 if they're in Barberton.

The program is a collaborative effort of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, Summit County Public Health, the cities of Akron and Barberton, the Barberton Community Foundation, the Knight Foundation and the Tuscora Park Health & Wellness Foundation.

Encouraging an alternate mode of transport

The primary objective of the program is to "encourage individuals to use bicycling as an alternate mode of transportation to visit attractions, commute to work or enjoy a bicycle ride for pleasure or exercise," the coalition said in a news release.

“We are grateful to our funders for enabling us to provide this important health and wellness, transportation and recreation program," Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition President and CEO Dan Rice said in a statement. "The Summit Bicycle Share program demonstrates our commitment to equity in bicycling, regardless of your income, race, education and experience."
