Bosse basketball coach Shane Burkhart named to Indiana All-Star staff
EVANSVILLE — Shane Burkhart will get his first experience on the Indiana All-Star bench this summer.
The Bosse High School boys' basketball coach has been named an assistant for the Indiana senior team. Along with Frankton coach Brent Brobston, Burkhart will aide Ben Davis coach Don Carlisle during the annual series against Kentucky in June.
He called it an exciting moment not just for him but his program. Burkhart has previously had two players — Mekhi Lairy and Kiyron Powell — named to the senior team.
"It's extremely humbling," said Burkhart. "I hope my past and present assistant coaches and players realize this reward is about them. It's easy to do your job when you have great players and people around you. Every once in a while you get recognized for something like that."
Burkhart has a 250-132 record in 15 seasons at Bosse. He passed Joe Mullan as the program's all-time wins leader against Boonville on Dec. 2. The Bulldogs, led by first-team All-SIAC guard Taray Howell, went 13-11 this winter and lost in the opening round of the sectional.
The Marion High graduate is one of four active Southern Indiana Athletic Conference coaches with 250 or more career victories. He has won seven sectional and four regional titles. Bosse advanced to the state championship game in 2016 and 2018.
He is the first Bosse basketball coach to be selected to the Indiana All-Star staff since former girls coach Angie Oliver was an assistant in 2008.
"From a standpoint of getting to know the kids and having multiple times to wear the Indiana All-Star across your chest, it's going to be a great experience," said Burkhart. "Be a part of such a great tradition. It takes you away for a week in an extremely important month. My assistant coaches will really have to step up to make sure we continue to build our program."
The Indiana All-Stars roster will be announced following the concluding of the season — the state finals will be played this Saturday. The All-Stars will play a girls-boys doubleheader against the Kentucky All-Stars June 9 in Owensboro, Ky., and June 10 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in addition to a game against the Indiana Junior All-Stars.
