Boston Celtics 2020-21 individual players grades: Javonte Green

Now that the 2020-21 Boston Celtics season is firmly in the rear-view mirror, it’s possible to spend some time taking stock of how each player did with the opportunity he had.

To that end, we are grading every player who put in time on the basketball court for the Celtics this season, including all 15 members of the regular roster, both two-way players and the players the team cut or traded away. That’s 21 players altogether, and today’s focus is reserve wing Javonte Green. Traded to the Chicago Bulls at the 2021 trade deadline, Boston’s in-house dunking machine will be graded only on what he did with the Celtics.

With that in mind, let’s get down to brass tacks regarding how Green did as a Celtic this season.

Offense

Green's high-flying dunks are spectacular, and he had games where he was able to put his vertical imprint on his sparing minutes effectively, relying on his athleticism to slash to the cup when he wasn't flushing the rock. His lack of a consistent three-point shot limited how much time the Virginia native actually got to contribute on this end of the court for the Celtics in 2020-21, but he was a helpful part of the rotation on a value contract. Defense

The Radford product was an especially solid defensive option off the bench for the Celtics in 2020-21, good enough even for a pair of spot starts when injuries required going a little deeper into the rotation than usual. While he likely won't be making any All-Defensive teams in the near future, a player on a budget contract able to stay with some of the league's tougher covers while not committing an excess of mistakes is about as much as anyone could hope for. Intangibles

Green was well-loved by his teammates, several of whom were shocked by his trade to the Bulls at the deadline. By all accounts a hard worker willing to fill whatever role was asked of him on a given night, the Petersburg native brought the sort of professionalism a career overseas as a journeyman can only instill. Overall

While Green was never a major part of the team's rotation, he knew his role and gave it his best on a consistent basis despite often playing with his next season's contract still not guaranteed. We got to watch him battle his way onto a playoff team as an undrafted player making his way into the league on a night-to-night basis, and he's continuing to grow as a player with Chicago.
