Boston Marathon 2023 LIVE: Updates and result as Eliud Kipchoge beaten after bombing remembered 10 years on

The Boston Marathon is taking place for the 127th time today as the world’s best distance runners descend on the Massachusetts city hoping to take victory in the world’s oldest annual marathon event.

This year’s edition holds special significance as it is the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, a domestic terrorist attack in 2013 that saw three people killed and hundreds injured. For a marathon that is fittingly held on Patriots’ Day in the United States, the bombing will be remembered and those killed commemorated with a military march.

Once the memorial is complete, the men’s, women’s and wheelchair fields will take on the challenging 26.2-mile course, with men’s marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge competing in Boston for the first time.

A mass of recreational runners will then try to survive the course, with around 30,000 people expected to start the race and thousands more cheering by the roadside.

Just as Bensen Kirupto caught up with the leaders his training partner, Evans Chebet, kicks on once more.

The two Kenyans were considered the most likely to win the race besides Eliud Kipchoge, Gabriel Geay is trying to hang on in third place.

The women’s race still waits for its critical moment as the leaders reach the 30 km mark.

The pack is still 11 with America’s Emma Bates leading the way. It’s been a fabulous run from her so far.

Here comes Benson Kipruto!

The 2021 champ has worked his way back up to Evans Chebet and Gabriel Geay and remains in contention with less than two miles to run.

The winner is going to be one of these three. But will cross the line first?

22 miles down for the elite men and there are still three potential winners:

Evans Chebet of Kenya, the defending champion,

Benson Kipruto of Kenya, the 2021 champion,

Gabriel Geay of Tanzania, in search of his first marquee win.

Chebet is out front by a metre or so ahead of Geay with Kipruto tracking their every move.

Evens Chebet and Gabriel Geay are the two leading men in the elite race. Geay is slowly catching the reigning champion.

It’s a complete contrast to the women’s elite race as there are 12 or so competitors still in the hunt for victory.

Evens Chebet is now 51 second ahead of Eliud Kipchoge. Kipchoge, the serial marathon champion, won’t be added the Boston Marathon to his list of triumphs.

It’s been a tough day for the 38-year-old.

With one hour and 40 minutes on the clock Evans Chebet eases away ahead of the elite men’s leading group. Last year’s winner seems comfortable and controlled and now looks to extend his advantage over the rest.

Eliud Kipchoge isn’t in the mix at present.

It’s quite a surprise to see Eliud Kipchoge drop so far back. He’s now at least 100m behind the leading five athletes with around 30 minutes of the race left to go.

It seems unlikely that he can come back from this.

Down! Celestine Chepchirchir of Kenya gets tripped up and stumbles in the women’s elite race. She’s back on her feet quickly but has fallen into the pack.

Up ahead Eliud Kipchoge is dropping back. A group of four runners have caught Gabriel Geay but Kipchoge seems to be struggling on the hills.

It’s actually seven men in the leading group: Eliud Kipchoge, Evans Chebet, John Korir, Albert Korir, Andualem Belay, Gabriel Geay and Benson Kipruto.

After the drinks station at the 25km mark, Geay has kicked on and pushed himself ahead of the others. It’s a strong and aggressive move from him.

Kipchoge is now down in seventh place.

Susannah Scaroni wins the Women’s Wheelchair race!

Another fairly dominant performance. Scaroni took the early lead and managed to, not only hold on, but extend her lead all the way through the race until the finish line.

Scaroni has previously won the New York and Chicago marathon’s and now adds Boston to her collection.

The men’s elite runners went through 20km in 59:01 and are close to the halfway mark now. The front half of the Boston Marathon is the easier one to run so expect the final finishing time to be slightly over two hours.

In the women’s elite race Emma Bates has started to fall off the pace that Amane Beriso, who owns the third-fastest marathon time ever, is setting.

It’s been effective push from the Ethiopian as they approach mile nine.

After a conservative opening 10km - ran over 34:48 minutes with 21 women in lead pack - Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso has made a move and totally strung out the pack in the women’s race.

They’re racing single-file now with Beriso at the front.

Eliud Kipchoge is totally setting the pace for the men’s elite field after 49 minutes of racing. The leading group is 11-men strong by Kipchoge is out are the front.

Marcel Hug is a truly impressive racer. He reaches halfway stage in 36:31 and leads the men’s wheelchair race by more than four minutes.

At this pace he’s likely to finish by 3:15pm.

The women’s wheelchair leader, Susannah Scaroni, stops to make some adjustments to a wheel. It’s a quick fix, though, and she is back on the road.

That delay shouldn’t be too costly but it’s one she won’t be overly happy about.

Marcel Hug has passed the 10km marker in the men’s wheelchair race and leads the rest of the field by nearly two minutes. That’s unreal.

Susannah Scaroni of the United States has opened up a lead of 20 seconds, leaving the four-time Boston winner Manuela Schär back in third at this stage.

Kipchoge unsure what to expect from Boston Marathon

14:28 , Jack Rathborn

The Boston Marathon with it’s plethora of hills is unlike most other long distance races such as Berlin or London which are incredible flat and allow for world record times.

The Men’s current world record holder Eliud Kipchoge has never raced in Boston but at 38-years-old will make his debut later today.

“I don’t know what will happen at 10, 15, 25 kilometers,” he said during an interview with The New York Times, “It’s a huge experience and a different experience than many other marathons. That’s what makes me nervous.

“I think Boston is like the Olympics, it’s a new environment to me. Well-selected people. It’s like a championship race.”

The women’s wheelchair racers are now underway as well setting off just a few minutes behind the men.

Here we go!

The Boston Marathon is finally underway with the men’s wheelchair race first off the line. Marcel Hug of Switzerland, a five-time winner and the defending champion, renews his rivalry with Daniel Romanchuk of the United States.

The duo were leagues ahead of the rest of the field when they raced in the London marathon last year, will they repeat those performances in Boston this afternoon?

What is Heartbreak Hill?

14:03 , Mike Jones

Hills define the Boston Marathon route with runners dreading one specific hill in particular nicknamed Heartbreak Hill located between Mile 20 and 21 in Newton.

Heartbreak Hill is the last of four hills in Newton which begin at Mile 16. It is not the steepest or highest hill along the course - it makes only an 88 foot ascent over a 0.4 mile stretch near Boston College.

However, runners consider Heartbreak Hill to be the most challenging stretch of the course because it occurs so far along in the race, at a point when their energy and stamina is almost depleted.

Don’t forget about the four other hills that come just before it too.

What is the route for the 2023 Boston Marathon?

13:55 , Mike Jones

The course begins in Hopkinton, a town in rural Massachusetts, with runners setting off from Main Street and heading down Route 135. They will plod through the towns of Ashland, Framingham, and Natick, before joining Route 16 shortly after Wellesley. Hanging a right on to Commonwealth Avenue (Route 30) by the fire station in Newton Lower Falls, the course continues over the Newton Hills and by Boston College, a university, before arriving at Cleveland Circle via Chestnut Hill Avenue.

The runners will then negotiate a left turn on to Beacon Street as it nears the finish, turning right on to Hereford Street, left on to Boylston Street and eventually concluding near the Boston Public Library in Copley Square in the heart of the city.

It’s been quite a foggy start this morning for the competitors at the Boston Marathon and the weather is set to be glum for most of the day.

Making their Boston Marathon debuts in the women’s race are Sharon Lokedi of Kenya (the New York City Marathon winner last year), Lonah Salpeter of Israel (who finished second in New York City) and Amane Beriso of Ethiopia (who has run the third-fastest marathon in history).

Ababel Yeshaneh of Ethiopia and Mary Ngugi of Kenya (last year’s second- and third-place finishers, respectively) return along with past winners Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and Des Linden of the United States.

Sir Mo Farah finished seventh in the Port-Gentil 10km in Gabon as he stepped up preparations for what is expected to be his last London Marathon.

The 40-year-old double Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion crossed the line in 30 minutes and 41 seconds in a race dominated by Kenyan athletes, who occupied 10 of the first 12 places.

They were led home by Vincent Kipkemoi in 28mins and 11secs, 11 seconds ahead of Boniface Kibiwott with Emmanuel Kiprop third in 28mins and 29secs.

Cleophas Meyan completed an all-Kenyan top four with compatriot Moses Kibet sixth behind Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele.

Farah, who announced in January that 2023 was likely to be his final year of competitive racing before retirement, has been training in Ethiopia ahead of London.

Why is the marathon Called the “Patriots’ Day Race” in Boston?

13:01 , Mike Jones

The Boston Marathon has taken place every year since 1897.

Initially, runners ran on or just after Patriots’ Day, a Massachusetts holiday that celebrates the battle on Lexington Green and Old North Bridge in Concord on April 19, 1775, marking the official beginning of the American Revolution.

In Boston, many people continue to call the marathon the "Patriots’ Day Race."

In 1969, Patriots’ Day started to be officially celebrated on the third Monday in April, and the marathon shifted to this day as well.

Because Patriots’ Day is an official Massachusetts State holiday, most state, county, municipal offices, and schools are closed - which helps alleviate some of the commuter traffic into Boston and enables more people to watch the race.

When is the Boston Marathon?

12:55 , Mike Jones

The Boston Marathon will be held on Monday 17 April, which is Patriots’ Day in the United States.

The rough start timings for the event are as follows:

  • Women’s Wheelchair - 9.05 am ET (2.05pm BST)

  • Handcycles & Duos - 9.30 am ET (2.30pm BST)

Monday’s race will see the debut of a new division for non-binary athletes.

The Boston Athletic Association added the category when registration opened last fall. In order to enter, non-binary athletes needed to complete a marathon as a non-binary participant during the qualifying window.

Twenty-seven runners have signed up, the BAA said. Five of the six major marathons include a non-binary category, with Tokyo the exception.

The race will include 264 members of the One Fund community — survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing attack, along with friends and family of the victims and those raising money for related causes.

The 2013 race was interrupted when two backpack bombs exploded on Boylston Street, steps from the finish line.

Three people were killed and nearly 300 injured, with 17 people losing limbs to the pressure-cooker bombs that were packed with nails and ball bearings.

The city marked 10 years since the bombing on Saturday, the calendar anniversary.

Boston Marathon poses new challenge for Kipchoge: slow down

12:34 , Mike Jones

World record-holder Eliud Kipchoge has the speed to outclass the rest of the field when he makes his Boston Marathon debut on Monday.

To win, he may have to slow things down.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist and 12-time major marathon champion knows that the 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston’s Back Bay isn’t like those flat and friendly courses where he established himself as perhaps the greatest distance runner of all time.

No matter, he said: Breaking the tape is what’s important.

Regardless of how long it takes.

There’s a little over two and a half hours left to go before the elite men’s race begins around 2.37pm. Before that both wheelchair races will have started and the amatuer runners will be gearing up for their runs to start.

To help those who have never run the course before, three blue lines are painted on the street and runners can follow them all the way to the finish line.

The Fairmont Copley scream tunnel

12:19 , Mike Jones

This is pretty cool.

Every year the athletes competing in the Boston Marathon stay at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. On the morning of the race hotel and marathon staff fill the lobby and create their own “scream tunnel” to send the professional runners off to the start line.

Claps and cheers for such as stars like Eliud Kipchoge and Amane Beriso can be heard as the runners make their way to the buses which will then take then to the race start.

It’s a small gesture but will probably mean quite a lot to the people involved.

The real consequence of World Athletics’ transgender ban will go untold

12:05 , Mike Jones

A few hours after World Athletics announced it had banned transgender women from elite female events, someone tagged Parkrun UK in a tweet, and asked: “Will you follow @WorldAthletics lead and ban transgender women from women’s athletics at all levels?”

It was only one post by one person with a hundred-odd followers, but the tweet calling for transgender women to be barred from an organised run was seen by nearly 20,000 people in 24 hours.

In purely sporting terms, the transgender debate is about long-standing dividing lines built on the biological differences between men and women, which are being tested by the reality that not everyone fits neatly into those boxes. It is about biology and identity, about sex and gender, about finding an impossible balance between the principle of fairness and the right of inclusion.

But when a major sporting body makes a decision on transgender exclusion like this one, there will inevitably be unintended consequences at every level. The detailed 2021 Trans Lives Survey found 77 per cent of trans women who participate in sport have experienced transphobia, and 14 per cent experience abuse or discrimination “every time” they play. As Australian trans-runner Ricki Coughlan warned this week, World Athletics’ decision could now embolden “forces of hate” against the community, because the notion of exclusion will permeate far deeper than elite sport.

World record-holder Eliud Kipchoge headlines a star-studded Boston Marathon field on Monday as the world’s oldest 26.2-mile race takes on a somber tone 10 years after a bombing attack near the finish line.

Survivors, first responders and other members of the public gathered on Saturday in Boston in honor of the victims of the marathon bombing, one of the most high-profile attacks on U.S. soil that claimed three lives and saw scores more injured.

A shattered community came together in the wake of the attack, adopting the slogan “Boston Strong” in a show of unity and resilience.

“This year, I am thinking about the importance of continuing on in the face of pain and setbacks,” Boston‘s Coordinated Response Team Director Tania Del Rio said in a statement.

Boston Marathon Bombing full story uncovered in Netflix documentary, ten years on

It has been a decade since two homemade bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston marathon, killing Martin Richard, eight, Krystle Campbell, 29, and Lingzi Lu, 23, and injuring more than 200 people. The city marked the 10th anniversary of the attacks on 15 April with One Boston Day, a day for “volunteer events and acts of kindness”.

There will be a shoe drive, a spice drive, a donation drive for food, baby supplies and clothing, and a blood drive, among other initiatives. One Boston Day has been billed as a day to honour the city’s “spirit of care for one another in response to the tragic events of April 15, 2013.”

A new Netflix documentary series, American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, looks back not only on the attack and its aftermath, but also on the past 10 years, and what we have learned since. Its anchor is the four-day period after the bombing, and the search for 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan.

Tamerlan died on 19 April following a confrontation with authorities and after being struck by an SUV his brother was driving. Dzhokhar was convicted of the bombing and sentenced to death in 2015. He remains on death row.

Ten years on from the Boston Marathon bombing, do we know the full story?

What is Heartbreak Hill?

10:57 , Mike Jones
