Bourg man arrested, accused of killing police officer when he rammed the deputy's vehicle

Louisiana State Police has arrested a Bourg man who rammed into a Lafourche deputy's car early Sunday, killing the officer.

Anthony H. Savoie, 33, was arrested for first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, aggravated flight from an officer and on a warrant for failure to appear.

The incident that resulted in 44-year-old Sgt. Nicholas Pepper's death began as a routine traffic violation stop by the Houma Police Department and became a high-speed pursuit that stopped near Lafourche Crossing in Thibodaux.

During negotiations with the driver, Pepper was blocking traffic with his vehicle. Police say the Chevy Tahoe driven by Savoie accelerated and rammed Pepper's vehicle.

Pepper was pronounced dead at Thibodaux Regional Health System. The impact also injured another deputy, Madeline LeBoeuf.

Savoie was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

First-degree murder of a police officer can carry capital punishment.

He was secured and transported to the Lafourche Parish Jail and, after being booked, was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail for housing.
