Bourne firefighters rescue two boaters who lost power off Wings Neck

BOURNE — Firefighters rescued a man and a woman off a boat sinking at the end of Wings Neck on Sunday afternoon.

The call came in just before 4 p.m. for two adults in distress aboard an approximately 23-foot cuddy-cabin boat. The boat had lost power and was crashing against rocks due to high winds and waves, Bourne Deputy Chief Paul Weeks said.

He had no personal information about the two boaters but said  they were wearing life vests. Wings Neck is a peninsula on the south side of the Cape Cod Canal between Pocasset Harbor and the Hog Island Channel.

Rescue boat effort fails

Bourne firefighters initially tried to reach the scene using a rescue boat, but the effort failed due to strong gusts.

"We sent our boat over there, but they couldn't get closer without causing damage," Weeks said.

Instead, they donned water rescue survival suits, boarded the vessel and brought the boaters to safety. No injuries were reported.

Along with firefighters, Bourne police assisted in the rescue that took 50 minutes, from when the emergency call was received to clearing the scene.

The boat remained at the location Sunday afternoon when the Fire Department departed the scene. It was secured to shore with taglines and a tow boat company was called to remove it, Weeks said.
