Boutique hotel breaks ground in downtown Fishers along Nickel Plate Trail

City and company officials have broken ground on the last piece of Browning Investment’s muscular downtown development that is reshaping 116th Street.

Almost four years after the Indianapolis-based company announced the $157 million, three-part project, construction of an upscale hotel will begin.

Hotel Nickel Plate, along the Nickel Plate Trail, follows Browning’s construction of the 6-story First Internet Bank headquarters next door and a 237-unit apartment building, Nickel Plate Station, across the street.

Browning partnered with Dora Hotel Co., a Fishers hotel developer and manager, on the Hilton Tapestry Collection hotel. But plans to build it were sidelined for two years because of Coronavirus pandemic-related supply and labor shortages.

Browning officials have said the delay helped planners refine the design so it pays homage to Fishers’ history as a train stop on the old Nickel Plate railroad, which is now a rails-to-trails greenway.

“The Nickel Plate Trail is an incredible public asset that integrates seamlessly with the design of the hotel,” Adam Chavers, chief development officer at Browning, said in a news release.

The hotel exterior will be black brick with limestone-colored stone accents at the entry and a decorative canopy.  A first-floor restaurant will have large floor-to-ceiling windows.

Since the Browning plan was announced in 2018, Fishers has approved a five-story condominium complex a block away with homes selling for up to $1 million, begun work on a new City Hall that will double as the city’s arts center and finished building a trail tunnel under 116th.

The city’s investment in the projects is about $72 million.
