Bovina boys, Farwell girls capture titles

Jan. 3—CLAUDE, Texas — Bovina's boys capped a five-game sweep over two days, taking the championship of the North Plains Invitational with a 57-52 victory over Follett in Friday night's championship game.

The Mustangs (11-6) won three games in pool play, then defeated Amarillo Highland Park 52-42 in Friday's semifinal matchup.

Senior Ceasar Amaya had three 3-pointers and finished with 26 points for the Mustangs, who erased a six-point halftime deficit and outscored the Panthers 19-12 in the final stanza. Senior Darian DeLaRosa finished with 14 points.

For Follett (13-6), junior Maddox Miller tallied 22 points.

Farwell girls post Caprock tourney crown — At Lubbock, sophomores Makylee Baldwin, Bella Jaime and Landri Richey combined for 43 points on Saturday and the Lady Blue went overtime to top Texas Class 2A No. 6 Martins Mill 55-51 in the finals of the MGM Elegante bracket of the 68-team Caprock Classic holiday tournament.

Farwell (18-3), ranked 11th in Class 2A by MaxPreps, eased out to a six-point halftime lead but the Lady Mustangs (13-5) posted a 26-20 second-half edge to force OT. The Lady Blue outscored Follett 7-3 in the extra session.

Baldwin scored 16 points, Jaime 15 and Richey 12 for Farwell. Another sophomore, Mattie Dollar, notched a game-high 23 points for Martins Mill.

In a girls game on Saturday:

Amarillo Tascosa 70, Bovina 23 — The Fillies stepped up a few levels in competition, falling behind 28-4 at the quarter and unable to recover at Amarillo.

Senior Sieyera Emile led the Class 5A Lady Rebels (19-3) with 12 points while sophomore Tryssa Dowd finished with 10. For Bovina (7-8), four players — Lesley Esparza, Aaliyah Garcia and sisters Alyssa and Cassie Marquez — each collected four points.
