CLINTON TWP. — There is a new pet grooming shop near Clinton called Bow Wow Meow.

It is owned by Julie White, who operates the business out of her climate-controlled, two-car garage. It does not look like a garage, however. White has been working very hard on making it into a shop over the past couple of months.

White got tired of driving an hour to Flat Rock to groom pets for 20 years and in January began grooming with another groomer at a shop near home. She decided to strike out on her own and began her business at her home May 1.

She takes all breeds of cats and dogs. The pets are washed and groomed without the use of sedatives and in most cases without a muzzle.

For washing cats, White says she just has to hold on. Most dogs do not bite while being trimmed, but for those that are aggressive a muzzle may be needed. All pets that come to the shop to be groomed must be up to date on their vaccinations, so patrons visiting for the first time should bring their pets' papers.

White is flexible on hours. So far she has been working Monday through Saturday. Calling ahead for an appointment is recommended.

White has been in the pet grooming business for 30 years and has lived in Lenawee County for 20 years.

She said she has no favorite pet to groom but does enjoy grooming bigger breed dogs like the Newfoundland.

Cats do need to be groomed because their fur gets very matted, White said.

White charges based on the condition of the pet and the cut. There are no specific prices. She assesses the pet on the spot and then gives a price.

White said the typical pet needs to be groomed every six to eight weeks. She is accepting new clients now. She grooms about seven to 10 pets a day
