Bowie State University to host solar eclipse watch party
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — At least 3,000 people are expected at Bowie State University on April 8 for the university’s solar eclipse watch party.
“Bring everyone together and spend the day together watching the very rare celestial event,” Professor Dr. Dawit Hailu said.
Why is the solar eclipse on April 8 such a big deal?
The event will be held at the Bulldog Football Stadium, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“We’ll have around 87-88% obstruction around 3:20 p.m.,” Hailu said.
According to NASA, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon travels between the sun and earth, casting a shadow that fully or partially blocks the sun.
Hailu hopes that the university’s watch party will also serve as a magnet for high school students interested in learning more about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
“So they can be inspired, and hopefully join our STEM, we are bringing NASA engineers,” Hailu said.

Free glasses will be provided to those who attend the party, which experts say are needed for eye protection.
Drivers are also reminded to take precautions during the partial solar eclipse.
“I would say we should be cautious, even not drive at the time,” Hailu said.
Maryland will not see a partial solar eclipse of this magnitude until 2079, according to Hailu.
