Bowling roundup: Charlotte's Savannah Portillo, Stockbridge's Mason Keene win state titles

Savannah Portillo had already put together a big debut season of high school bowling entering the state finals.

The freshman added to that Saturday at Century Lanes in Waterford.

Portillo capped her season by winning the Division 2 singles championship. She had games of 242 and 171 to beat Fruitport senior Brynna Hanson by a score of 413-384 in the final.

Portillo reached the final by opening with a 450-359 win and then following with a 405-263 quarterfinal win. In the semifinal, she had games of 246 and 191 to earn a 437-296 victory.

Portillo, who also finished as the CAAC singles champion this winter, placed fourth during qualifying with a six-game series of 1,189.

Owosso juniors Lily Kelley and Zoie Brandt were the other match-play qualifiers. Kelley finished fifth in qualifying with a series of 1,190, while Brandt was 15th (1,115). Both fell in the opening round of match play.

DIVISION 1

Holt senior Alissa VanHorn had one of the best scores in qualifying before seeing her run end in the opening round of match play. VanHorn fell by 19 pins to Novi’s Maddy Gazzarari in the first round of match play. She was fourth in qualifying with a six-game series of 1,193.

Holt sophomore Lola Knox just missed reaching match play and finished 17th with a six-game series of 1,118. She finished four pins shy of the final qualifying spot.

DIVISION 3

Corunna’s Carly Pavka was the lone match play qualifier from the area after placing 15th. She had a six-game series of 1,070 before falling in the opening round of match play to Ishpeming Westwood’s Kylie Junak.

Ovid-Elsie’s Gracie Schultz finished 14 pins shy of match play and finished 17th.

DIVISION 4

Pewamo-Westphalia junior Kennedy Cassel finished 29th in qualifying with a six-game series of 912 on Saturday at M-66 Bowl. Portland St. Patrick’s Isabella Russman was 31st.

DIVISION 2

Mason Keene earned the last qualifying spot into the bracket portion of the Division 3 singles state finals.

The Stockbridge senior made the most of the opportunity and capped his career as an individual state champion.

Keene beat Gladwin junior Harvey Zelt 407-353 in the championship match at JAX 60 in Jackson on Saturday. He rolled games of 203 and 204 to wrap up the title.

Keene, who earned the 16th spot in bracket play by three pins, beat the top seed Dustin Moeckel of Napoleon, 403-337, in his opening match. He followed with a 470-312 quarterfinal win over Armada’s Ryan Ching and a 427-386 semifinal win over Ogemaw Heights’ Tyler Downs.

Each of the games Keene rolled in bracket play were above 200.

Lakewood junior Philip Butler also qualified for bracket play by finishing 10th in qualifying. He lost his opening match 391-350.

DIVISION 1

Holt junior Nick Schaberg had his strong showing at the state finals Saturday at Thunderbowl Lanes with a narrow loss to open match play. Schaberg fell by six pins to Rockford’s Tony DeLuccia in his first-round match.

Schaberg had the third-best score during qualifying, finishing with a six-game series of 1,368.

DIVISION 2

Mason junior Jonathon Hendershot led the area bowlers in Division 2 and was 19th in qualifying at Century Bowl in Waterford. Hendershot finished with a six-game series of 1,115 and was 17 pins shy of the final bracket play spot.

DeWitt’s Narciso Garza was 25th.

DIVISION 4

Leslie junior Ian Hultberg was the top area finisher and placed 19th in qualifying at the singles state finals at M-66 Bowl. He had a six-game series of 1,046.
