Box donation campaign aims to help local animal shelters

At locations across the city, donations are being accepted to help the Amarillo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Gracie’s Project to take care of the animals at their facilities.

Vanissa Brown and Nell Williams, who volunteer with local animal sheltering organizations like the SPCA, started the donation boxes about five years ago to help local shelters have some of the supplies that are needed to be able to maintain their shelters for their animals. The donations focus on cleaning supplies so that these organizations can make their funding focus on the animals, but they will take food, treats and toys if donated.

A donation box is located at Central Bark in Amarillo to help local shelters get supplies for animals in their shelter. Donations will be accepted through the end of the year.

"It is going a little slow but hopefully, will pick up now,” Williams said. “We are totally dependent on local donations and are not aligned with the national organization, so donations go directly to our shelter on South Coulter.”

Donations will be collected at these locations until the end of the year.

“With these donations, more money can go toward taking care of and feeding these animals,” Brown said. “This will be used for keeping the shelters clean, so other funds can be spent on the animals as needed.”

Brown said that people can drop off donations at the boxes set up in various locations or can contact the Amarillo SPCA https://www.amarillospcashelter.com/ or Gracie’s Project  at https://www.graciesproject.com/ if they want to help.

“Amarillo and Canyon are giving communities, and this is a good way to help our furry friends that cannot help themselves during the holiday season,” Williams added.
