Boy, 7, seriously injured in crash involving bicycle, school bus in Holt

DELHI TWP. — Police are looking for witnesses to a crash involving a school bus and a bicycle that seriously injured a 7-year-old boy Wednesday afternoon

The crash happened about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Harding Avenue and Schippell Street, the Ingham County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Holt school officials said the crash involved the Elliott Elementary School Route No. 5 bus.

The boy was riding his bike westbound on the sidewalk along Harding when he went into the road and crashed into the side of a Holt Public Schools bus as it was turning south onto Schippell from westbound Harding, officials said. The intersection is just east of North Aurelius Road and north of East Willoughby Road.

The boy was run over by the rear tires of the bus. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The boy had gotten off the bus at the intersection before the crash happened, Holt Superintendent David Hornak said in an email to parents.

"We wish the student a full and speedy recovery and will continue to support and stay in touch with the family, Hornak wrote. "We are conducting a thorough review of this incident."

The district's mental health support team was at Elliott Elementary on Thursday, Hornak wrote.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the sheriff's department at (517) 676-8202.
