“A child died in Apolda today who was seeking protection from (Russian dictator Vladimir) Putin’s bombs with his family,” Maier tweeted.

He vowed to make every effort to find out the cause of the fire.

“There must be complete clarity here,” Maier said.

Prior to that, German media reported that a body had been discovered at the scene. However, the identity of the deceased will only be established after a forensic medical examination, law enforcement officials said.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the federal security authorities are in constant contact with the Thuringian police and are “always ready to provide support.”

“My condolences to the family and the refugees who lived here,” she wrote on Twitter.

“I want to thank the rescuers who quickly helped and saved many people from the fire.”
