Boyd Fiscal meets virtually to close out year

Dec. 20—CATLETTSBURG — The Boyd County Fiscal Court voted to make moves toward helping a neighboring county's school resource officers on Tuesday.

Judge-Executive Eric Chaney and commissioners Randy Stapleton, David Salisbury and Jeremy Holbrook convened virtually for the final meeting of 2023 because of high illness rate in the county.

Chaney added a pair of items to the agenda, one of which pertained to assisting Greenup County Schools' recently installed school resource officer program.

The Greenup County Sheriff's Office donated a Dodge Charger for one SRO, but the second SRO didn't have a vehicle.

Boyd County Sheriff Jamie Reihs said by the commissioners voting to take a 2011 Crown Victoria out of service in Boyd and donate it to Greenup County.

Chaney and the commission also voted to surplus three vehicles and, in turn, purchase a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe from the Flatwoods Police Department for $20,000.

"It's fully equipped, low miles, maintenance kept up," Reihs said. "It's a great purchase to put one of our drug units in to be able to do their job."

Other notable items from Tuesday's virtual meeting:

—Chaney provided a vague recap of a "very successful trip" to Vermont, the home of Vermont Sports Car. "It's the absolute definition of an impressive establishment and facility. They build rally cars for Subaru Motorsports." Chaney said the county and Vermont Sports Car are "working on putting a bunch of puzzle pieces together. ... I don't know how that looks yet; I don't know what that is. I am looking forward to see what the future holds on that."

—The commission voted to file petitions to put Commerce Park (in Cannonsburg between City National Bank and AM/PM Spirits) and Doyle Street (in Westwood near Dalton Tire) into the county road system.

—The court votes on a Mack Truck resolution that would entail leasing two brand new Macks, declare them surplus and sell them the following year.

"The ones we bought last year were $189,000 apiece on a lease, but we sold them at $232,000 at an auction," Chaney said.

—The court appointed Alex Krivchenia to the Boyd County Library Board, which prompting a favorable comment on Facebook from Director Debbie Cosper.

—The court reappointed George Stout to the Sanitation District 2 board.

—To break a lengthy silent period during Community Comment, County Clerk Kevin Johnston dialed Chaney's mobile number, which was displayed on the screen. It was the lone call.

—The next fiscal court meeting is set for Tuesday, Jan. 9.
