Boyfriend charged in March death of Belleville woman

Investigators arrested a Belleville woman's boyfriend on Friday morning and charged him in the woman's death.

Johnny Rivera, 52, was taken into custody at his apartment in the Bronx and faces murder charges in the killing of Candy Torres, 50, whom he was dating at the time of her death, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

On March 12, a relative of Torres' went to the victim's home on Hero Way in Belleville because her family was unable to reach her by phone, prosecutors said.

It was there the relative found Torres unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene later that night.

The regional Medical Examiner's Office has ruled her death a homicide, citing blunt force trauma as the cause, prosecutors said.

As of Friday afternoon, Rivera remained in custody in New York, said Katherine Carter, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office.
