Boyne City boys hold on late vs. Charlevoix, Collins' free throws preserve Rayder girls win
CHARLEVOIX — Boyne City boys’ basketball coach Randy Calcaterra has been pretty clear with his guys that they really can’t overlook anyone on their schedule.
So, when a one-win Charlevoix team welcomed them in Friday night, that message was hammered home again.
And it’s a good thing for the Ramblers, as their rival Rayders gave them all they could handle.
A close game throughout, it sat in tied game early in the fourth, then Boyne got the stops that they needed to down the stretch to hold on for a 49-45 win.
It came as a 10th straight victory for Boyne City and kept them unbeaten within the Lake Michigan Conference, while Charlevoix dropped a seventh straight and is still looking for that first LMC win.
Still, Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak was proud of his young group for never letting up Friday night.
“Proud of the way we battled,” said Troshak. “We went on an 11-2 run in the third to tie it up at 38. It was back and forth, we just came up short. We moved the ball better, played solid defense and never gave up.
“Alex Calcaterra was tough. It seemed like whenever they needed a big basket he got it for them. (Mason) Wilcox hit a big three late too.”
The Ramblers led 15-12 after one, then 25-18 at the half, before building a little cushion after three in a 36-27 game. The Rayders then came back with the run between the third and fourth to tie it up at 38-all.
Wilcox led with 17 points, Calcaterra scored 16 and had six rebounds, Jacob Johnson had seven points and seven rebounds and Jayden Alger also had five points and five rebounds. Jack Neer also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Ramblers, to go with a basket.
For Charlevoix, Hudson Vollmer had 13 points, Troy Nickel had 10 points, Ryan Pearl scored six and had eight rebounds and Vitale Collins had six.
Boyne City (10-1, 5-0 LMC) will next bring in Traverse City St. Francis for a key Lake Michigan matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Charlevoix (1-9, 0-5 LMC) will head to Kalkaska on Tuesday, looking to pick up its first LMC victory.
NON-CONFERENCE
Pellston 76, Harbor Light 74
HARBOR SPRINGS — It came a day late, but the first-ever varsity basketball game within the newly built Solid Rock Center at Harbor Light Christian finally took place Friday night.
The Harbor Light Christian boys’ basketball team welcomed in Pellston and the Hornets went off from deep, spoiling the Swordsmen’s night with a 76-74 win.
“Defensively, we didn’t get the job done to come out on top,” Harbor Light coach Jason Roussin said. “Pellston came out hot and they hit 13 3-pointers. But, it was a blessing to have a game in the Solid Rock Center. We’re extremely thankful for the community.”
A varsity doubleheader against Cadillac Heritage Christian was supposed to take place on Thursday to open play in the gym, though was cancelled due to weather.
Pellston led throughout the night Friday, including 15-13 after one, 28-27 at the end of two and 48-42 heading to the fourth.
Coby Dyer led the Hornets with 36 points in a can’t-miss night for the senior.
Landon Jakeway finished with 20 points and six rebounds for the Swordsmen, Kirk Rose had 18 points and 11 rebounds, David Chamberlin had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Andrew Stahl added 11 points.
Harbor Light’s JV improved to 9-0 with a win, led by Ayden Burns’ 14 and Truett Kruger’s 10.
Harbor Light (6-5) will next welcome in the Traverse City Bulldogs on Monday, Jan. 23, then head to Ellsworth on Friday, while Pellston (3-7) will travel to Central Lake up next on Friday.
Rudyard 76, Mackinaw City 42
RUDYARD — Lars Huffman put up 15 points to lead the Mackinaw City boys’ basketball team Friday, though the Comets took a tough 76-42 loss against Rudyard on the road.
Mackinaw City trailed 23-7 after the opening quarter, then 41-22 at the half and 60-33 following the third.
Trystan Swanson added eight points and Cooper Whipkey also had eight.
Mackinaw City (9-3) will next head to Boyne Falls on Monday, Jan. 23.
East Jordan 61, Battle Creek St. Philip 46
BIG RAPIDS — The East Jordan boys’ basketball team got in a Saturday game at Ferris State University where they earned a 61-46 victory over Battle Creek St. Philip.
The Red Devils ended a streak of five straight losses with the win.
Tied 10-10 after one, EJ pulled ahead 29-21 at the end of the first half and then led 45-30 heading to the fourth.
Korbyn Russell finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Angel Delgado had 10 points and six rebounds and Brendan Aenis had eight points and seven boards.
East Jordan (3-7) will next welcome in Harbor Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 24, then bring in Charlevoix on Friday.
NORTHERN LAKES
Wolverine 61, Boyne Fall 40
BOYNE FALLS — The Boyne Falls boys’ basketball team fell to Wolverine in a league matchup Friday night, 61-40.
Wolverine led throughout the night, including 17-14 after one, 30-22 at the half and 41-34 heading to the fourth.
Ashton Spang led Boyne Falls with 19 points and JT Greenier had 10.
For Wolverine, Ezekiel Glazier scored 18 points and Kaden Wandrie had 14.
Boyne Falls (0-9, 0-7) will next host Mackinaw City on Monday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
LAKE MICHIGAN
Charlevoix 40, Boyne City 35
CHARLEVOIX — The rivalry matchup between the Charlevoix and Boyne City girls’ basketball teams went to the Rayders Friday night in a 40-35 final in Charlevoix.
Charlevoix got out to an 11-7 lead at the end of one, then led 18-13 at the half, before a 26-26 tie heading to the fourth.
Charlevoix’s Bayani Collins then went 8 for 8 at the free throw line in the fourth and Abbey Wright was 4 for 4 to help seal the victory.
Collins finished the game with 12 points, four steals and three rebounds, Anna Kemp had nine points, four rebounds and three steals, Wright scored five and had six rebounds and four assists and Mikayla Sharrow added seven points.
For Boyne City, Ava Maginity led with 15 points and Braydin Noble scored six.
Charlevoix (6-8, 4-3 LMC) will bring in Kalkaska on Tuesday, Jan. 24 up next, part of a four-game home stretch, while Boyne City (2-11, 1-6 LMC) travels to Traverse City St. Francis on Tuesday.
Harbor Springs 60, Grayling 35
GRAYLING — The Harbor Springs girls’ basketball team headed into Friday night’s game at Grayling looking to start up a new win streak and victory No. 1 is in the books.
After having its 10-game wins streak come to a close earlier in the week, the Rams earned a 60-35 win over the Vikings Friday.
Harbor led just 20-16 at the break, then turned things on in the third with a 39-23 advantage heading to the fourth, aided by eight points from Hailey Fisher in the third.
Olivia Flynn led Harbor with 30 points, Fisher scored 13 and Sierra Kruzel added seven.
Harbor Springs (11-1, 6-1 LMC) will next bring in East Jordan on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Elk Rapids 39, East Jordan 27
East Jordan 44, Battle Creek St. Philip 37
ELK RAPIDS — Playing on a back to back, the East Jordan girls’ basketball team picked up a loss Friday night, then rebounded at Ferris State on Saturday.
Elk Rapids handed the Red Devils a 39-27 defeat, then East Jordan defeated Battle Creek St. Philip in a 44-37 game in Big Rapids.
The Red Devils played the Elks close Friday night, sitting in just a six point game late, before falling. Lindsey Cross finished with nine points and Izzy Boyer and Lillian Stone each had eight.
On Saturday, Stone came through with 16 points to lead the way, June Kirkpatrick scored 15 and Elliona Leaman had seven points.
East Jordan (5-6, 2-5 LMC) will next travel to Harbor Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
NORTHERN LAKES
Boyne Falls 27, Wolverine 16
BOYNE FALLS — The Boyne Falls girls’ basketball team picked up a Northern Lakes victory over Wolverine at home Friday, 27-16.
It came as the first win of the season for the Loggers and moved them to 1-6 overall and in the league.
Alice Loper led with nine points and Riley Zbacnik scored eight.
Boyne Falls next hosts Mackinaw City Monday.
