Boyne City rebounds vs. EJ, Harbor Springs adds an LMC win for second straight

BOYNE CITY — A balanced night in the book with four different players finding double figures brought the Boyne City boys’ basketball team back to the win column Friday.

After having its 13-game win streak snapped by Gaylord last week, the Ramblers welcomed in East Jordan and started a new one with an 85-39 win.

Boyne City got out to a 29-13 lead after the first quarter, then really opened things up with a 20-point second to lead 49-21 at the half.

Boyne put up another 20-point quarter in the third to never let the Red Devils back in the game.

Mason Wilcox scored 16 points and had seven assists for Boyne, Jacob Johnson had 16 points and four rebounds, Alex Calcaterra had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists – while adding a pair of crowd igniting dunks – and Jaden Alger had 10 points and five rebounds.

Also for Boyne, Chas Stanek had seven points and four rebounds and Jagger Peck had seven points and four rebounds.

For East Jordan, Max Beal led with seven points and four rebounds, Eli Stone had six points and Devon Olstrom scored five.

Boyne City (13-2, 8-0 LMC) will next travel to Grayling on Tuesday, Feb. 7, while East Jordan (4-9, 2-6 LMC) heads to Traverse City St. Francis Tuesday.

Elk Rapids 51, Charlevoix 28

ELK RAPIDS — It was a tough offensive night Friday for the Charlevoix boys’ basketball team as they met up with Elk Rapids and took a 51-28 loss in LMC play.

Charlevoix’s offensive issues showed from the start, with the Elks ahead 14-6 after one, then 30-12 at the half. By the end of three, Elk Rapids led in a 46-19 game.

“Elk Rapids is a well-coached team, they played their game and we did not play our best game,” Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak said. “They converted well off our turnovers.”

Troy Nickel led the Rayders with 12 points and Logan Wadkins scored five.

Charlevoix (2-12, 1-7 LMC) next welcomes in Harbor Springs on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Harbor Springs 59, Kalkaska 44

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Springs boys’ basketball team followed its win over the Sault with a Lake Michigan Conference win over Kalkaska Friday night, 59-44.

A close first quarter lead for the Rams in a 13-9 game turned into a 32-23 advantage at the half and another big quarter from the Rams made it 47-31 at the end of three.

Braeden Flynn led the Rams with 24 points in another big game for the freshman, Rider Bartel and Brady Keiser each scored 10 and Jack Clancy added eight points.

Harbor Springs (6-8, 3-5 LMC) will hit the road to Charlevoix up next on Tuesday, Feb. 7 for a LMC matchup.

Harbor Light 73, Boyne Falls 31

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Light Christian boys’ basketball team found the answer to some recent scoring issues in a 73-31 victory over visiting Boyne Falls Friday.

The Swordsmen led in a 21-5 game after one quarter, then pulled ahead 49-19 at the break.

David Chamberlin led with 19 points, Kirk Rose scored 16 points, Landon Jakeway had 11 and Andrew Stahl also had 10 points for Harbor Light.

For Boyne Falls, Ashton Spang led with 14 points and Jery Love had nine points.

Boyne Falls (0-14, 0-11 NLC) next welcomes Ellsworth on Monday, Feb. 6, while Harbor Light (8-7, 7-2 NLC) will travel to Mackinaw City on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

GIRLS BASKETBALL 

Ovid-Elsie 59, Mackinaw City 55

ALMA — The first loss for the Mackinaw City girls’ basketball team came Saturday in a matchup with a 15-win, D3 honorable mention ranked Ovid-Elsie at Alma College.

The Comets put in a valiant effort in 59-55 defeat, hanging with Ovid-Elsie the whole way through.

Tied 12-12 after one quarter, the Comets headed to halftime down 23-19, their first time trailing at half this season. Mackinaw then trailed 51-41 heading to the fourth.

In the final quarter, the Comets pulled off a 14-4 run to tie the game at 55 with 48 seconds remaining, though the Marauders then went on to knock down four free throws to pick up the victory.

Larissa Huffman had 18 points, 10 rebounds and two assists for Mackinaw, Madison Smith had 16 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and two assists and Marlie Postula had nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Gracie Beauchamp also had six points, 10 rebounds and two blocks and Julia Sullivan had six points and three steals.

Mackinaw City (14-1) next brings in Harbor Light Christian on Monday, Feb. 6.
