Boynton Beach approves $80 million 'game-changing' makeover

I'm still trying to catch up after being on vacation for three weeks — is there anything better than getting paid not to work? — but wanted to pass along one piece of information that I haven't gotten a chance to write about.

On Tuesday, the Boynton Beach city commission gave final approval to a 236-unit housing project that will be known as The Pierce and will include a public parking garage and 16,800 square feet of commercial space.

The project, located west of Federal Highway between Ocean Avenue and Boynton Beach Boulevard, is being developed by Fort Lauderdale-based Affiliated Development.

Boynton Beach's Community Redevelopment Agency selected Affiliated Development over four other bidders on Nov. 30 to spearhead the endeavor, which includes plans to keep the iconic Hurricane Alley Raw Bar & Restaurant as a neighborhood fixture.

Kim Kelly, the longtime owner of Hurricane Alley, called the project "game-changing for Boynton Beach."

The project, with an estimated cost of $73.1 million, is named "The Pierce,' as an homage to Charlie Pierce, a South Florida pioneer and an original "Barefoot Mailman" who lived in Boynton Beach.

The Pierce will offer 50% of its 236 units at varying workforce housing rates. The Pierce’s 8-story apartment building will offer luxury finishes, features and amenities including a resort-style pool with private cabanas, state of the art fitness facility, co-work collective and keyless Bluetooth door entry, according to a news release.

The developer hopes to break ground by mid-2023.

I'll be writing more about this important development in the coming days, weeks and months.

Good to be back with y'all.
