Boys basketball: Bontempo brings the heat to lift Ellington

Mar. 5—Mike Bontempo put the Ellington High boys basketball team on his back Thursday and carried it to a victory.

Bontempo scored 14 points to lead the Knights to a 49-30 victory over visiting Bolton in NCCC East play.

Tommy Garrow, Zach Killoran, and Braedan Shea added 10 points apiece for the Knights (6-1), who led 29-19 at the half.

Craig Wood had nine points to pace the Bulldogs (3-4). Trevor Buchanan added eight.

Both teams return to action today. Ellington hosts Rockville, while Bolton visits Somers.

GRANBY 59, WINDSOR LOCKS 47. In Granby, Justin Phillips' 16 points paced the host Bears to the NCCC West win.

Granby (2-1) led 31-25 at halftime and then outscored Windsor Locks 17-6 in the third quarter to break it open. Jack Degray added 14 points for the Bears while Jaydon Buckle led the Raiders with 24 points.

Windsor Locks gets a rematch with Granby on its home floor Monday.

WINDSOR 68, HARTFORD PUBLIC 59. In Hartford, Prince Samuels had 21 points in Windsor's CCC Region A victory.

The Warriors led 52-39 after three quarters and put it away by going 9-for-10 at the foul line in the fourth, including 6-for-6 by Samuels. Raymond Rodriguez added 15 points and Tyler Betsy 10 to join Samuels in double figures.

Windsor hosts Enfield Monday.

BLOOMFIELD 67, ENFIELD 56. In Bloomkfield, Daron Bryden had 26 points as the host Warhawks avenged an earlier loss to Enfield in CCC Region A play.

Bloomfield (2-6) took a 10-point first-quarter lead and did not look back. Ty Calloway recorded his second straight 30-point game against the Warhawks, finishing with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals to pace Enfield (1-6).

The Eagles visit Hartford Public Saturday.
