Boys Basketball: Flat Rock offense hits new high to take down Jefferson

FLAT ROCK − Flat Rock's boys basketball team scored 61 points three week ago against Saline.

That was the Rams' best mark of the season.

Until Friday.

Flat Rock needed just one quarter to get nearly halfway to that mark. The Rams opened up a 30-5 lead on Jefferson heading into the second quarter and rang up a season-high points to win 70-40.

Graham Junge scored 14 of his 19 points in the first. He was efficient on his shots, shooting 7-for-10 overall while hitting four of his six three-point attempts. He added 6 assists, 4 steals, and 2 rebounds.

Odin Nemeth added 18 points for Flat Rock, which won its fifth straight game to improve to 11-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the Huron League.

Jefferson bounced back from a slow start with 21 points in the second quarter but could not climb out of the early hole.

Myles Tackett and Trey Oldenburg scored 12 points apiece for the Bears (4-9).

Ida 72, Dundee 58

DUNDEE − Dundee hung with Ida through three quarters before the Blue Streaks pulled away in the fourth to capture a win over its archrival.

Ida led 49-43 going into the fourth before outscoring the Vikings 23-15.

"Couldn’t be more proud of the teams effort tonight. We played 32 full minutes of team basketball," Ida coach Jared Karner said. "That is how the Dundee/Ida rivalry should be. Fast paced. Loud gym. Fun environment.

"We were a point shy of all five starters scoring in double digits. Everyone stepped up at the right time."

Kirby Carsten (18), AJ Schrader (16), Ty Robertson (15), Nate Miller (14), and Carter Diedrich (9) led the Blues Streaks. Ida improved to 7-7 overall.

Braiden Whitaker led Dundee (7-7) with 15 points, Drew Bolster scored 13, and Ethan Layton added 11.

Ida won the junior varsity game 55-37 to improve to 7-6. Owen Snyder led with 16 points.

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron treated its Coming Home crowd to its second win in the past three games.

"We had a great crowd tonight and our team played well from top to bottom,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “They played hard and had fun doing so.”

Sammy Farrugia led 4-6 Huron with 15 points, Kyle Kantola added 12, and Ethan Woolery rang up 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Connor Dessellier scored 14 points for Milan (3-9).

Grosse Ile 48, SMCC 45

The offense for both sides hit a wall in the second half, but Grosse Ile was able to pull out a few more points to leave St. Mary Catholic Central with a win.

"It was a very good high school basketball game," SMCC coach Randy Windham said. "Both teams really left it on the floor. Grosse Ile made one more play than us."

SMCC led 34-33 at halftime, but the Falcons scored just 11 points the rest of the way. Grosse Ile did not fare much better with 15 second-half points.

Michael Laboe (16 points), Buddy Snodgrass (12), and Ian Foster (10) led the Falcons, who fell to 6-6 overall. Snodgrass also pulled down 13 rebounds.

SALINE − Saline led at halftime. Bedford took the lead after three quarters.

But the Hornets had the last word, outscoring Bedford 22-9 in the fourth to deliver the Mules their third loss of the season and second in a row.

"We had a brutal first half offensively. We couldn’t seem to get anything to go in for us," Bedford coach Jordan Bollin said. "We really had a nice third quarter erasing a 10-point half time deficit and actually leading by 3 going into the fourth.

"We ran out of gas late."

Andrew Hollinger led Bedford 21 points and 12 rebounds, Carsen Behnke had 9 points and 8 rebounds, and Simon Eighmey added 4 points and 9 rebounds.

ANN ARBOR – Monroe managed just 14 points in the first half while Ann Arbor Skyline poured in 40.

“We ran into a better team tonight that shot the ball extremely well.” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. “And their size was just too much for us at on the defensive end.”

Lucis Rzepa hit four 3-pointers to tie Logan Frank as Monroe’s high scorer with 12 points.

The Trojans slipped to 3-9.

PETERSBURG − Britton Deerfield came from behind in the fourth quarter after outscoring Summerfield 24-19 to slip away with the victory.

Summerfield led 44-42 after three quarters of play.

Logan Shiels led the Patriots with 10 of his game-high 27 points in the final period.

Tyler Dafoe had 22 points and Teddy Gault 17 for Summerfield (7-6).

"Three areas were the difference tonight," Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said. "We have to take care of the ball, rebound better, and be more efficient in the second quarter. We keep finding ways to not win games. These young  kids are playing really hard but have to learn to win close games."

Riverview led by just 5 points, 40-35, through three quarters and then nearly equaled that total in the final 8 minutes of the game.

"We knew that we were going up against a tough Riverview team today and that we we would need play a solid game on both ends to come out with a win," Airport coach Jason Ruhlig said. "We also knew that we would need to contain Colby Dorn. ... Colby proved his worth with multiple guys guarding him and notching 27 points."

Colin Nowak (15), Brandon McComas (14), and Joel Westaway (12) all scored in double figures for the 6-8 Jets.

Dillon Byrd and Austin Tackett scored 8 points apiece for Airport in a 58-44 junior varsity loss.
