Boys Basketball: Fourth quarter rallies lead to wins for Erie Mason, SMCC

ADRIAN − Defense kept Erie Mason's boys basketball team in the game.

The offense took a little longer to get going, but the Eagles found their footing in the fourth quarter to come from behind and defeat Lenawee Christian 50-46 Friday night.

Lenawee Christian led 36-34 after three quarters of play before Mason caught fire in the final period. The Eagles outscored Lenawee 16-10 in the fourth.

"We survived an excellent effort by Lenawee on the road tonight by finally controlling the defensive end, rebounding, and holding Lenawee's leader scorer (Brandon Summer) to 6 points and none in the second half," Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said.

Carson Brown led Mason with six 3-pointers, 22 points, and 6 steals, and Alex Langenderfer scored 19 points. Xavier Wise scored all 5 of his points in the pivotal fourth quarter and led the team with 7 rebounds.

Mason also won the junior varsity game 43-31 behind Karter Stubleski's 13 points.

St. Mary Catholic Central clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter to pull away in a close back-and-forth battle with Jefferson Friday night.

Jefferson led 31-30 at halftime before SMCC (10-9) tied the game at 46-46 heading into the fourth. The Falcons held the Bears to just 9 points the rest of the way.

Michael Laboe scored 8 of SMCC's 18 points in the final period and finished with 22. Buddy Snodgrass led all scorers with a career-high 26 points.

Eastin Kegley (15), Myles Tackett (13), Gabe Gelso (13), and Ben Merkel (10) all scored in double figures for Jefferson (6-13).

NEW BOSTON – Airport (10-10) survived New Boston Huron’s initial surge, then took charge to pull away.

“Huron has come out most games all season long and played tough defense and outscored a lot of opponents,” Airport coach Jason Ruhlig said. “We survived the first quarter with only a 4-point deficit.  … I told the guys we would need to be consistent for 32 minutes and we could lose the first quarter battle but still win the war.”

Brandon McComas came off the bench to score 17 points. He was joined in double figures by Joel Westaway (14), Cooper Nye (12) and Brett Moore (11).

Kyle Kantola scored 21 points and Ethan Woolery 11 for 5-13 Huron.

RIVERVIEW − Riverview moved into a tie with Flat Rock for first place in the Huron League after coming from behind in the fourth quarter to win Friday night.

After trailing at halftime, Flat Rock pulled ahead 33-27 heading into the final period but then were outscored 17-8 by the Pirates.

Graham Junge had 22 points for Flat Rock, which can still clinch at least a share of the league title with a win over Jefferson next week. Flat Rock is 16-3 overall and 12-1 in the league.

Flat Rock won the JV game 48-38. Cyrus Goins scored 14 points, and Adam Szalay and Dylan Liedel had 13 apiece.

The Ram freshmen won 42-40 behind 20 points from Andrew Gillum.

DEARBORN − Dearborn Divine Child's 25-12 advantage in the second quarter was the difference Friday night against Gibraltar Carlson.

Carlson won the other three quarters but trailed 52-41 going into the fourth quarter and could not make up the difference.

Ben Przytula (20), Dejuan Johnson (17), and Roy Braddy (16) all scored in double figures for the Marauders, who fell to 6-12 overall.
