Boys basketball: Good start for Eagles
Nov. 19—WILLMAR — Following suit behind the CCS' girls basketball team, the Eagles' boys dominated Victory Christian on Friday.
In their 2022 season opener, the Eagles defeated the Knights 65-44.
"It's just fun to have an early game in the season like this to check out where you're at and see what you need to work on," CCS head coach Aaron Reid said. "We've got plenty of things we can work on, defensively and offensively. It was fun to come out here and put together some flashes of good offense."
Eagles senior Mark Arnold was quick to say it was an all-around team effort that led to CCS' victory.
Leading that team effort was 6-foot-6-inch senior Jonny Reid in dominating fashion. He scored 30 of the Eagles' 65 points and shot 13 of 25 from the field, including four three-pointers. Reid also added a team-high 11 rebounds with three steals and three assists.
Arnold trailed behind Reid with 13 points, making 50% of his shots. He recorded a team-high seven steals with eight rebounds and four assists.
Freshman Gavin Mulder also provided a spark for the Eagles. He notched 10 points with four rebounds, three assists and a block.
"We all played really well. It's not just one person. We played together, as a team," Arnold said. "I'm super happy with the way we played."
Offensively, Reid enjoyed when his Eagles had spacing and passing, which allowed them to get good looks.
Reid wants to see his team's defense improve on some of the little things — being in an athletic position and keeping their hands up. He also emphasized that he wants his team to continue building on their teamwork.
"When we play five as one, we're a much better team," Reid said. "When we play three, two guys on their own agenda, that's when we struggle. We let them come back a few times when we weren't playing together. We just got to play together, as a team."
The Eagles next play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Fourth Baptist Christian School.
