The baskets at Hilliard Darby have been awfully friendly lately.

The Panthers boys basketball team connected on 13 3-pointers and rolled to a 64-40 win over Worthington Kilbourne on Jan. 18.

The 13 3s were one shy of the program record set last season at Dublin Jerome and came just three days after Ashley Cox hit seven 3s to break the girls program mark in a 51-27 win over Willard.

Central Ohio high school basketball: Five things we learned from MLK weekend

“My teammates were doing a great job of getting themselves open,” said guard Jackson Carey, who finished with nine assists. “They were moving without the ball and coming off screens. I was just finding them and they were hitting (their shots) tonight.”

Matt Sech hit four 3s and came within a toe on the line of two more in the fourth quarter that would have broken the record. Sech led the Panthers, who improved to 7-6, with 18 points.

“Sometimes those things are contagious,” Darby coach Chris Maul said. “Sometimes when the ball goes in, the feeling in the gym is different. Guys are more willing to move the ball one extra time.”

Cam Gilkerson hit three 3s, all in the first half, and finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Darby.

Gio Roberts, who hit eight 3s to help the Panthers break the record last year, had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Nate Ruland also had 10 points.

“We shoot a lot of 3s,” Maul said. “We space the floor and feel like we have a lot of guys that can do that. The main part of our offense is to try to attack the rim and, if it’s not there, to kick out to guys that have their feet set. We’ve told our guys all year that if (their) feet are set and in the flow of the offense and (they’re) a confident shooter, let it fly.”

Ayden Parsons had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wolves, who lost their third consecutive game to fall to 5-5.

“We shot it well, but what I was happiest about is that we gave up four points in the second quarter,” Maul said. “Our goal is single-digit quarters. Anytime you hold a team to 40 points – even if you don’t shoot it well – you still have a chance to win. So, I was most proud of our defensive effort.”
