Boys basketball: Points were hard to come by in Henderson's 33-29 win over Webster

DIXON, Ky. -- For the third time this season, Henderson County held an opponent under 30 points for a game.

This time, the Colonels didn't score much more than that in a 33-29 victory at Webster County on Tuesday.

  • The 33 points were the fewest points ever scored by a Henderson County team in a win. Before this season, the previous low came during the 1958-59 season in a 38-36 win over Douglass. This year's team has already come in under that mark once in a 36-35 win over Christian County on Jan. 11.

  • Tuesday's game also marked the fewest points scored by a Henderson County team since a 52-30 loss to Lexington Dunbar in the 2017-18 season.

  • The Colonels, who are holding opponents to 48.4 points a game, also held their first two opponents this season to 29 points -- Heritage Christian 85-29 in the season opener and Dawson Springs 78-29.

  • Both Henderson County and Webster County had long stretches without a field goal. After taking a 5-0 lead, the Colonels were scoreless for more than 9 1/2 minutes as the Trojans scored 11 unanswered points in the first half. Webster County took an 18-17 lead with 2:27 left in the third quarter and then went without a field goal for more than 9 1/2 minutes. Trevor Baker's 3-pointer with 0:52 to play ended a 14-5 run by the Colonels.

  • Free throw shooting was abysmal. The teams were a combined 19-of-46 from the line. Henderson County was 9-of-20 and made just 2-of-8 in the final minute. Webster County finished 10-of-23 and also made 2 of its last 8 attempts in the last two minutes.

Gerard Thomas led Henderson County (12-7) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Cooper Davenport added nine points on three 3-pointers.

Bradin Nelson scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Webster County (9-11), while Aaron Harmon scored nine points.

The Colonels host Union County (11-6) on Friday in another district contest. Both teams are 1-0 in district play, while Webster County is 0-2,

The Trojans will visit Madisonville (13-7) on Friday.
