Boys basketball roundup: Brainerd rallies to down Willmar, 70-65

Dec. 10—WILLMAR — Brainerd survived a first-half onslaught by the Willmar boys basketball team. Then coming out after halftime, the Warriors got ahead and never looked back.

Down by 11 midway through the first half, Brainerd came back to win the Central Lakes Conference matchup 70-65 in the Big Red Gym at Willmar High School.

The Warriors trailed 36-33 at halftime, but got a momentum swing when Luke Diem hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. In the second half, Garrett Gilbert scored a bucket with 15 minutes, 16 seconds left to play to put the Warriors up 40-38. Brainerd never trailed the rest of the way.

Up 44-43, the Warriors pulled away in the second half with a 14-2 run to go up 58-45 with 6:40 to play.

Willmar opened the game on a roll as senior Blake Schoolmeester had a white-hot start. Tied 7-7, Schoolmeester hit four straight three-pointers to put the team up 19-7. Then a shot in the post by Schoolmeester put the Cardinals ahead 21-9 with 9:19 left before the break.

Schoolmeester scored 17 first-half points on the way to a game-high 28. He was 9 of 16 from the field, including 6 of 9 from three-point range. He also grabbed six rebounds.

Sam Raitz added 14 points and six rebounds. Max Mobley scored all 12 of his points in the opening half.

Brainerd had a trio of double-digit scorers, led by Jon Pecarich. He had 16 points. Nick Evanson followed with 15 points and Eli Hoelz added 14.

Willmar's next game is at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Alexandria.

Cooper Dack had 21 points and Gannon Reidinger, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, added 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead Montevideo past Benson at Montevideo.

Montevideo is now 2-0 in West Central Conference play.

Juan Espinoza scored 21 points to lead Benson.
